OA June 26 Pride Mixer and the last Monday of Drinking Socially!

a few newsworthy items before we get to the meat of the newsletter this week:

1. I don't know if you've heard already but our own Mimi Imfurst has got herself to the second round of voting to get on season 2 of Rupaul's Drag Race - seriously...but now you still gotta keep voting for her...only the top 100 people got into the second round - and the second round is ONLY 7 days and we're already into the 2nd day of it....so get out there and vote again...every day for the next 6 days...from your computer at work, at home, your iphone...whatever! :)

http://rupaulcasting.com/people/mimiimfurst

2. I'm going to be stepping down from the steering committee for Out Astoria for a while...don't think of it as a permanent departure, it's more like a leave of absence...a sabbatical, if you will. :) I'll still be around to stop by the odd mixer or dinner and of course if you have a question you're more than welcome to contact me directly, though if it's a question about up coming OA events you will probably get a faster reply if you contact these two Out Astoria committee members:

Chap Day at deaghaidh@gmail.com or on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/chapjday

Michael Mallon at diabelli@aol.com or on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=16201545

So make sure you're at the mixer this Friday or the last drinking socially monday on the 29th - i'll be limiting myself to only 10 goodbye drinks :)

now onto the weekend that is pride!

Whether it's Aaron Elvis, Kevin Graves, or Corey Tut, you can be sure the music will be great (if not, downright inspired)!

Bring all your friends and gaybors, there's plenty of room - well at least until 9pm...for some reason things get very crowded then! :)

Brunch tomorrow, a rally, and charity stuff....

if you're up for it tonight you'll want to head on out to Lavish - if you made i to last week's mixer you got a taste for how crazy things get there after 11pm these days...:) and although they've had to put the underwear party on hiatus for a bit (if you were there you know why) expect to see maybe a special installment of it in the coming months...something that can be better prepared for...for everyone!

though this would be on opportune moment to suggest that everyone take a moment to place a few well-timed votes for Mimi Imfurst and her race to get onto season two of Rupaul's Drag Race...so if you haven't already voted today (and really you DO know you can vote DAILY, right? why not take a moment now and get one of our local gals on the little screen next season!? :)

http://rupaulcasting.com/people/MimiImfurst

now with that done, if you're not planning to be out late with the local boys and girls at lavish lounge tonight might i direct you to our brunch tomorrow afternoon!

SAT - MAY 30 - OUT ASTORIA MAY BRUNCH AT LOCALE - 2PM
33-02 34 Avenue, Astoria, NY - 718-729-9080
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=82661636863

We haven't been back to Locale in ages - and originally this month we were slated to be at Cup Diner but then they decided to start renovations on their place so we decided to come back to an old brunch staple of ours!

http://www.localeastoria.com/

Locale Cafe & Bar is located in the heart of historic Astoria, NY. It's style reflects the neighborhoods modern yet multi-cultural sheik aspect, which has become a signature of present day Astoria. Locale's diverse menu can accommodate almost any taste, whether it's an early afternoon brunch or an intimate dinner by candlelight.

We can usually get a group of 20 in here at two different table groups! but try not to turn up too late, there's a limit of bloody marys to which even i must adhere! :)

after the brunch the OA steering committee will be meeting up to have a little pre-pride powwow - so if there's anything you'd like to ask or suggest feel free to send it to me tomorrow before 4pm and i'll be glad to bring it up at the meeting!

but aside from that if you're itching to do a little marriage equality stuff and really who isn't these days...let me draw your attention to a fabulous rally...

SUN - MAY 31 - RALLY FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY AT ATHENS PARK IN ASTORIA - 6PM TO 8PM - FREE
30th Avenue at 30th Street, Astoria, NY - 877-772-0089
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=83785986862

This fabulous rally in support of Marriage Equality is being put together by your local girls and boys involved with the local Marriage Equality Capter, Western Queens for Marriage Equality, and Astorians for Marriage Equality! But I'm going to give you the text of the evite just exactly as they have written it because who could say it better than they can?! Remember you don't have to be on the facebook evite to attend, but if you want to invite more people to the rally feel free to just forward them this email...of course they want as many people there to support Marriage Equality as possible...and you know I'll be there along with some of my Out Astoria bretheren! :)

Description:

Thanks for making the Prop 8 rally such a success- now we will be continuing NYS efforts for marriage equality with a rally this Sunday in Queens.

Come show your support for equality, meet up with fellow activists from Queens, hear music from Broadway stars (names TBA), and hear from government officials and members of our community who support marriage equality.

State Senator George Onorato, who represents much of Western Queens, currently opposes marriage equality but our work got us a meeting with him this past Thursday...so lets keep it up!

Senator Huntley, Senator Padavan, and Senator Addabbo of Queens currently oppose marriage equality. Senator Monsorrate is a supporter but not yet listed as a co-sponsor. Also, the Senate Majority Leader, Malcolm Smith, is a Queens senator. So, Let's show these Queen's Senators that there is public support for marriage equality!

This rally is sponsored by Western Queens for Marriage Equality. Western Queens for Marriage Equality is a coalition of groups including: Democracy for New York City, Long Island City Alliance, New York State Young Democrats, Queens County Young Democrats, the Jewish Alliance for Change, IntegrityNYC, Marriage Equality New York, Broadway Impact, Civil Rights Front, Empire State Pride Agenda, Civil Marriage Trail Project, OUT Astoria, Astorians United Against Hate Crimes and Astorians United for Peace and Justice.

Western Queens for Marriage Equality is a coalition group that believes marriage is a human right that should be available to all New Yorkers, regardless of sexual orientation. In the words of Mildred Loving, the woman whose courage made interracial marriage legal throughout America, marriage is about "the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. [We] support the freedom to marry for all."

now if this sunday isn't enough for you you'll probably want to come and check out Lavish Lounge's new Monday night series for charity!

MON - JUNE 1 - OUT ASTORIA AT LAVISH LOUNGE'S DRINKING SOCIALLY - 7PM TO 10PM - FREE
34-01 36 Avenue, Astoria, NY -718-361-0022
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=82872323533

Tonight and EVERY Monday in the month of June, the owners of Lavish Lounge have agreed to donate ALL profits made beyond their nightly overhead to charity!

Yeah SERIOUSLY! And during the month of June it's going to be your best friends at Out Astoria!

http://www.lavishloungeny.com/

Of course they'll still be doing 2-4-1 drinks from 7pm to 10pm so make sure you stop by and have a few happy hour cocktails before heading home...keep in mind every dollar you spend a certain portion of it is going back to Out Astoria to help us get more events running in this fabulous little neighborhood!

Talk about a great way to get warmed up before NYC pride at the end of the month!

See you there this Monday!

and of course you don't want to forget...

Mixers on Thursday/Friday and more for the weekend!

so before I forget in these lengthy emails I do, I've got a few announcements!

remember to take a moment and vote for Mimi Imfurst in her run for season 2 of Rupaul's Drag Race on Logo - you can vote every 24 hours and thus far she's managed to stay in the top 5 each day...we want to make sure she gets in the top 3 at least before the end of the voting (in about 33 days) so remember...vote daily!

http://rupaulcasting.com/people/MimiImfurst

by the way did we mention that Lavish is open 7 days a week now?! :) I'll attach their new flyers below!

on top of that...the lovely people at Astoria Performing Arts Center have presented Out Astoria with a "friends" discount code for the first 4 performances of their production of The Children's Hour opening tonight!

http://www.apacny.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18&Itemid=32

to buy tickets just head to:

https://www.ovationtix.com/trs/cal/405

and choose any of the first four performances (Thrusday at 8pm, Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 6pm) and before you choose how many tickets you want, just enter the discount code: Lillian75 and you'll be able to purchase $10 tickets to any of those shows!

but if you can't do any of those shows, they always need some ushers for each performance of the play throughout the entire run, so if you want to see the show for free and don't mind helping them out an hour or two before the show...just send an email to christina - christina@apac.org - and let her know you'd like to volunteer!

in addition there's a lot of buzz about the local marriage equality work being done and we just wanted to make sure you all knew where to go to get in touch with and lend your support to the fantastic people (you might have seen them flyering at subway stations in Astoria lately) who are doing so much for our community! you can find them at:

http://groups.google.com/group/SD12

and

http://www.westernqueensformarriageequality.com/

and you might see some of them this weekend at various events for QLGPC and our own mixer!

Dinner tonight at Mojave - 7PM - a few notes - and the weekend!

Yes it's time for the next OA dinner and tonight it's going to be at Mojave at the Ditmars Blvd stop in Astoria, but before we get to the specifics of that we'll have to bring up a few public service announcements:

Because Out Astoria is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit social organization we have to be very careful about the Out Astoria name appearing in anything politically oriented...yes that's just the nature of the IRS...making everything as complicated as possible...so to that end our official statement is that "Out Astoria does not endorse any political candidate for any office."

However because there is a LOT going on directly concerning all of our members we have been referring interested parties to the following groups that are geared specifically to our demographic - LGBT and being in Astoria:

NYS Senate District 12 is a group site designed specifically for marriage equality to address the issue of Sen. Onorato

http://groups.google.com/group/SD12

and also Astorians for Marriage Equality

http://www.astoriansformarriageequality.com/

and on facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=67509268636

for those of you looking to get more involved locally these would be your best bet and you'll probably meet some of our other members there as well! :)

speaking of other members...have you heard Mimi Imfurst (your hostest with the mostest at Lavish Lounge) is running (in heels no less) to get on the second season of Rupaul's Drag Race!? Never mind that you already know she's fierce enough to hold her own against anybody else on that show, Out Astoria is proud to support her in her effort and asks that you do so as well...what better way to show her your appreciation for all her work at Lavish than to put her on that show and get her some of the recognition she deserves!

http://rupaulcasting.com/people/MimiImfurst

she's been in 30th place, then 1st place, then 5th place, then 2nd place...we're all hoping to keep her in the top 5 until the first on line elimination which is taking place around 41 days from now...so remember...VOTE DAILY...and do what i do...if you have a smart phone...vote from your phone too :)

okay end of announcements, on we go to dinner and upcoming events:

TONIGHT - MAY 13 - OUT ASTORIA'S MAY DINNER AT MOJAVE - 7PM
22-36 31 Street, Astoria, NY - 718-545-4100
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=84569742896

In this adobe hacienda, the décor is subdued and soothing. Warm cream color walls, dark wood floors and furniture allow one to focus on the artistic design of the room, with three separate pitched ceilings made from spruce and fir strategically placed with hidden lighting on the walls. When evening falls, the flickering glow of candles adds comfortable warmth to the already pleasant ambiance. The food is Southwestern with of course authentic Mexican flare. From starters such as the hand hacked Hass avocado guacamole and MotherRoad Roadhouse Chili to entrees such as slow & low braised Short ribs of Angus beef, Mojave’s menu is both fun and interesting.

http://www.mojaveny.com/

Perhaps you're feeling wild and crazy - perhaps you're still giddy from cinco de mayo and want to try something new...why not try Mojave's "Punisher" drink?

100% agave tequila infused with Habanero Peppers.

If you can drink it (and keep it down without any help), it's on them... ( 5 minute rule applies) After drinking the punisher, one can be immortalized on the wall of FAME, or reside with the masses on the wall of SHAME.. it all depends on who is drinking it.

Even I'm not that crazy! But I might be crazy enough to check out Karaoke at Lavish afterwards...:)

SUN - MAY 17 - OUT ASTORIA AT AIDS WALK NEW YORK - 8AM TO 5PM
Central Park, NY - OutAstoriaNYC@gmail.com
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=63881378435

I think it's too late for you to register now - but if you want to walk the walk with most of nyc you know where we'll be!

but AFTERWARDS there's been an interesting development:

SUN - MAY 17 - MARRIAGE EQUALITY NYC RALLY - 6TH AVE AT 45TH STREET - 5PM TO 7PM - FREE
6th Avenue at 45th Street, New York, NY - contact@broadwayimpact.com
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=79264887545
(this event is hosted by Broadway Impact and is NOT an Out Astoria event)

The NY State Assembly PASSED Marriage Equality!

It now moves on to the Senate where we only need to convince about eight more senators to vote for the bill and Gov. Paterson will sign it into law. We are so close and have to do everything we can to make sure New York joins the momentum that is sweeping the nation. We have just six weeks to get the people to call their senators and make their voices heard before the session ends and the bill dies.

The National Organization of Marriage (the anti-gay organization that created the "Gathering Storm" video and now have Miss CA as their spokesperson) will be protesting at Governor Paterson's Manhattan office on Sunday. They are protesting him for presenting the marriage equality bill and being such a strong supporter of civil rights.

As a response to their protest we are throwing a Marriage Equality Rally in Midtown to show the Governor and the State of New York, that we support equality for all. We have been working with Broadway Cares, HRC, Civil Rights Front, Empire State Pride Agenda and Marriage Equality NY to ensure that our response to their hate is LOVE.

Performances by:

Audra McDonald
Gavin Creel
Cheyenne Jackson
The Cast of HAIR

Appearances by:

Cynthia Nixon
Kristin Davis
David Hyde Pierce
Senator Tom Duane
Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell

*other performances and speakers pending.

We're starting the mixers at 8:00 PM now to basically give everyone enough time to go home and put on their face before coming back out to our little soiree! Yeah we know this is the start of Memorial Day weekend but we made our schedule and we're sticking to it...besides I know it's not a Fire Island weekend for EVERYONE heh some of you start the weekend before :)

OA raised $400! Sunday Brunch! And don't forget to register for AIDS Walk NY!

Thanks to everyone who came out to Dave&Buster's last night! John-Paul managed to raise $400 for Out Astoria - and he was even unlucky enough to be the first guy up for auction! Even the second, third and fourth guys didn't do as well! The next time you see John-Paul thank him for taking one for the team! :)

So tonight Why Leave Astoria's Trivia League is coming to an end...tonight's final game will decide if our gay team is just as dorky with inane knowledge as their straight sisters and brethren! If we take third place I'll be happy...but I'll be happier if we get to second or first place b/c that just means we'll get more of the money pot!

Which of course would then give us all a reason to pop by Lavish Lounge's Cha Cha Lounge party! Tonight's theme is "La Carnivale des Reines" whatever that means...but from what I can gather from the facebook evite it has something to do with cheap drinks b/c they're doing $4 well drinks, $5 absolut drinks and $6 top shelf all night long!

I probably won't be there till after 11pm if we're still standing after trivia but feel free to RSVP at:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=74981786315

SUN - APR 26 - OUT ASTORIA'S APRIL BRUNCH AT WINEGASM - 2PM
31-86 37 Street (at Broadway), Astoria, NY - 718-932-3331
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=156026050701

We're doing something a little special for our Brunch in April - we're going back to Winegasm to take advantage of their three-mimosa brunch special on Sunday, the 26th!

http://www.winegasmeatery.com/

For the set price of $15.95 you get the choice of a brunch entree with not one, not two, but THREE mimosas to help wash down your entree and sooth your hangover from the night before at Lavish!

http://www.winegasmeatery.com/foodMenu.pdf

There's nothing on this brunch menu I wouldn't try - I'm actually particularly looking forward to the citrus ricotta pancake - takes me back to the food bar days of yore and their malted pancakes!

Brunch at Winegasm is over at 4:00 PM so don't be late for this one! We'll have to cap this at 20 attendees again and we'll try to save everyone a seat at the big central table, but if we get more than that we can always start branching out to the side tables too!

DON'T FORGET TO REGISTER TO WALK WITH THE OUT ASTORIA TEAM!!!

SUN - MAY 17 - OUT ASTORIA AT AIDS WALK NEW YORK - 8AM TO 5PM - REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

OA Mixer tonight at Lavish Lounge - 8PM to 11PM

I have to start this week's message with a more organizational/practical statement - and it involves our various dinners and brunches - now you know I love you all, and I understand some of you have the best intentions and want to drum up numbers for all our fabulous events - but where the dinners and brunches are concerned, please you should only RSVP "yes" if you are actually able to attend...we have limited space at the sit down meal events and if you RSVP "yes" without thinking if you'll ACTUALLY be able to attend, you'll be taking away a seat from someone else who might not see the facebook evite until the next day. And by then we have 10 people on the "yes" list who of course say "yes" to everything we do (and I think that's great) however, if we only have room for say 25 of our members for an Out Astoria dinner and 40 people say they're coming, (even if i know 10 of those 40 will not be there b/c they don't actually live in Astoria anymore or they're just trying to popularize our little group), if a new member contacts me to ask if there will be room for him at the dinner, I won't be able to tell that person with any certainty if there will be room for them at the dinner.

And I want everyone to have a chance to come and chow down and chew the fat with the locals :) our last dinner at Winegasm reminded me how much fun can be had at such a large communal table where everyone can see everyone else and the conversation flows as easily as the wine!

Which reminds me, I also need to remind everyone that I made an error when scheduling the April Brunch for us...I neglected to remember that Winegasm only does brunch on Sundays - so take note...the next Out Astoria Brunch will be taking place on Sunday, April 26 at 2PM!

Also, if you have some time, I know some of you have already done this but there's a big study being done regarding LGBT Health and Human Services for LGBT people in New York...take a moment to fill it out!

http://www.nylgbtsurvey.org/

Now...on we go to the weekend and beyond!

TONIGHT! - APR 17 - OUT ASTORIA'S APRIL MIXER AT LAVISH LOUNGE - 8PM TO 11PM - FREE
34-01 36 Avenue, Astoria, NY - 718-361-0022
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=63382521626

You thought last time was fun? Just wait. :)

We're starting this mixer at 8:00 PM to basically give everyone enough time to go home and put on their face before coming back out to our little monthly soiree!

So anyway, make sure you come out to what's become the largest local gathering of Astoria queers since it started becoming a hot place to live for all of us homo boys and girls!

http://www.lavishloungeny.com/

As usual we'll be doing 2-4-1 beers/well-drinks and $3 cosmos from 7pm to 11pm - and the lovely ex-astorian DJ Kevin Graves will be starting an hour early at 9PM to round out our mixer and lead us all into the fabulous new Friday night festival of filth "Dirty Boy!"

WED - APR 22 - OUT ASTORIA AT THE MEN EVENT'S FIRST BACHELOR AUCTION - 6PM TO 9PM - FREE
234 West 42 Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY - 917-414-0221
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=64260026242

There's NO COVER for this 5th Anniversary Celebration of Hugh Hysell's popular Men Event after work mixers, but just to make things interesting, this Men Event Mixer is also the First Charity Bachelor Auction at Dave and Buster's on 42 Street (second floor!)

Out Astoria's own John Paul Detty will be on the auction block raising money for our little non-profit! Money's too tight to mention and with a body like John Paul's it doesn't get much tighter...with a bod like that, that dangerously disarming smile and the fact that he's actually got a brain to go with it...hell I wouldn't be surprised if our group raises a few coins to rub together (or bounce off JP's abs)!

So come out to the mixer, socialize with some other gay groups that'll be there, bid on John Paul and/or any number of the other stunning bachelors there too...Justin Weeks is adorable but my money's on John Paul. :)

Remember it's all going to charity and they're all LGBT associated so no matter which bachelor you end up with...you can rest assured your money's going to a worthy organization!

Now this evite is for our little group, but feel free to add additional people to this, or let people know about it...but remember to RSVP via the Men Event site too just so Hugh knows how many people to expect!

http://themenevent.com/tssbachelorauction.htm

Hugh's offering half price cocktails, and beer/wine specials during the event and even half price games till 7:30 PM!

We'll have to cap this at 20 attendees again and we'll try to save everyone a seat at the big central table, but if we get more than that we can always start branching out to the side tables too!

and if you're looking for something fun to do that Sunday evening...

SUN - APR 26 - SANTA CLAUS IS COMING OUT - 8:30 PM - $18 PRESALE
33-16 79 Street, Jackson Heights, NY - 718-874-9431 - info@jacksonrep.org
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=73960068244

Join us on Sunday April 26th at 8:30pm for a one night only performance of this hilarious one man show!

Jeffrey Solomon's one man mock-u-mentary reveals the secret romantic life of the beloved childhood icon, and the controversy that rocks the world when the truth leaks out to the public.

Mr. Solomon purports to have interviewed all the key figures in the scandal that has come to be known as Santa-gate including Santa's one true love - Italian-toy-maker Geovanni Geppetto, his beard (Mrs. Claus), the Anti-gay crusader who tries to ban Claus from the night skies, and the little gay boy who's heartfelt letter stirs Santa's conscience and changes Christmas forever.

This show will be appearing in the Absolut Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in May and then returns to the US for an Off Broadway run in LA and NY. Catch it now while you can !

Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by calling (212) 868-4444 or going to smarttix.com and searching for Santa.

All proceeds go to Jackson Rep and the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee.

WED - MAY 13 - OUT ASTORIA'S MAY DINNER AT MOJAVE - 7PM

Yeah...seriously.

If you can drink it (and keep it down without any help), it's on us... ( 5 minute rule applies) After drinking the punisher, one can be immortalized on the wall of FAME, or reside with the masses on the wall of SHAME.. it all depends on who is drinking it.

Even I'm not that crazy!

And of course, don't forget - we're also on Why Leave Astoria?! - I went to a round table discussion they were having and these people are a hoot - even if you're not gay you can get a lot from poking around their site - there's tons of stuff going on locally that even my jaded ass didn't know about! (Including a Trivia Tournament that Out Astoria has a team involved with these days - you can ask me if you want to know more about that!)
